Wilkins’s eyelids quivered, then were still

again.

“Look!” Bob exclaimed, catching sight of a

small animal in the shadows. “It’s a cat!”

“Here, kitty!” He held out his hand. “Here,

kitty!”

The cat, which was licking itself, rose and

strolled towards him. Bob picked it up.

“Look,” he said, “it has one blue eye and one

orange eye. I never saw a cat like that before.”

“Good heavens!” Professor Yarborough

seemed suddenly agitated. “Mismatched eyes?

Let me see!”

Bob held the cat for him to see. Professor

Yarborough frowned.

“An Abyssinian cat with mismatched eyes!” he

said. “I don’t know what to make of this. The

whole thing is becoming too – too fantastic. I told

you lads that when Ra-Orkon was buried, his

favourite royal cat was the only thing buried with

him. Well, that cat was an Abyssinian cat – the

royal cat of old Egypt – and it had mismatched

eyes and two black forepaws! Look at this cat. It

has mismatched eyes – and two black forepaws!”

They looked. It was true. The cat had two jet-black forepaws.

“Perhaps Wilkins can tell us something if we can revive him,” the professor said. He rubbed the butler’s wrists.

“Wilkins, old friend, speak to me,” he said. “Tell me what happened!”

The butler opened his eyes. He gazed at Professor Yarborough, but did not seem to see him. His eyes were blank.

“Wilkins. What happened?” the scientist asked. “Who stole Ra-Orkon? Was it that rug merchant?”

Wilkins made an effort to speak.

“Anubis!” he whispered in terror. “Anubis!”

“Anubis?” Professor Yarborough asked. “You’re saying that Anubis, the jackal god, stole Ra-Orkon’s mummy?”

“Anubis!” Wilkins repeated. Then he closed his eyes again. The professor put his hand on the butler’s forehead.

“He has a fever,” he said. “Boys, I will have to take him to a hospital at once. I don’t believe I’ll call the police yet. The newspapers would make a sensational story of it. Wilkins seems to be saying that an ancient Egyptian god stole Ra-Orkon’s mummy. And here we have a cat that looks like the reincarnation of Ra-Orkon’s favourite cat of three thousand years ago. I am utterly baffled, but Wilkins’s welfare comes first. We’ll take him to a hospital in your car if you don’t mind. When he can tell us what happened, we will have a better idea of what to do.

“Meanwhile, you take charge of the cat and tomorrow telephone me and we’ll see where we stand. Now help me lift Wilkins. We must get him to the car at once.”

They got Wilkins into the car and Worthington drove them to a small private hospital run by a friend of the professor’s. Wilkins was made comfortable, and soon Bob and Jupiter were on their way back to Headquarters. Bob held the cat, which purred quietly in his arms.

“Golly, Jupe,” Bob said. “Do you suppose this cat has anything to do with Ra-Orkon’s disappearance?”

Jupiter scowled. “I’m sure it does,” he said. “But I haven’t the faintest idea what.”

Jupe hated to be baffled, Bob knew. And right now he was about as baffled as Bob had ever seen him. He was so baffled that he had even forgotten they hadn’t heard from Pete, until Bob spoke.
